Crepe Pans

As have probably seen by now you know that crepe machines come in different sizes and shapes and some are gas or electric. But what happens when just want a few crepes at home and don’t want the expense of a dedicated crepe machine? You just use your very own crepe pan. You can still enjoy hours of family fun at home by just using a crepe pan.

Crepe Pans

Crepe pans are special pans used specifically to make crepes. A crepe pan is usually a thin pan that is made of a non-stick surface. The surface of the pan is coated with a chemical called polytetrafluoroethylene, which is the main component responsible for the non-stick surface. The pan has to be non-stick or the crepe mixture will stick to it and it will be hard to achieve your desired consistency. There are many types of crepe pans to choose from; below is a list of some of the types to give you a general idea about what to buy:

  • Upside down crepe pan. If you want to be able to make a crepe as thin as possible, this should be your pan of choice. This kind of pan is used to make the thinnest and most delicate of crepes, allowing you to make it as crispy as you want. You will have to use this pan on a stove top and you have to properly regulate the fire to achieve the right consistency.
  • If you don’t mind spending a little more, you can get yourself an electric crepe pan. The primary advantage of this kind of pan is that you can easily control the distribution of heat, making it easier to cook the crepe without burning it. While relatively expensive, if you really love crepes or you have a food business, this can be a rewarding investment.
  • You can also just buy a regular non-stick frying pan and use it as an alternative to crepe pans. Choose a very shallow one to make it easier to flatten the crepe. These pans are usually made out of the same non-stick material that a crepe pan is made of and they are cheaper. If you plan to just make crepes occasionally at home, then a shallow non-stick pan should be able to do the job for you.

Aside from a crepe pan, you should also invest in a T-crepe or good non-stick spatula to flatten your crepes out with. Some stores actually come with crepe kits that are equipped with a pan, a spatula, a wrap kit, and a crepe recipe book. This is a good alternative as kits are usually cheaper and they already contain all the tools you need to make a crepe. Investing in good quality crepe pans is essential if you want to be able to make delicious crepes.

The quality of some of these pans such as the le creuset crepe pan, the calphalon crepe pan, and the All Clad crepe pan, is such that you could even find them in some professional kitchens.
